
Barolo rises in the south of Piedmont, italy, in the heart of the world-famous Langhe region, this beautiful old town is a small pearl shining on a hilltop surrounded by incredible landscapes lined with vineyards yielding prestigious and noble wines, the ideal match for the Alba white truffle, another unique delicacy found in this generous land.
The area of Langhe surrounding Barolo is almost covered with vineyards featuring some of the best crus for the wine to which the town gives its name.
Famous are the vineyards of Cannubi, Brunate, Cerequio, and Sarmassa.
These are uniquely rich wines that offer the ideal pairing for truffle and stewed meats, signature elements of the cuisine of Piedmont.
What to see
The old town has medieval origins and extends along the main road leading to a castle that belonged to the Fallettis, an important family of the local gentry, ant that is now the venue of the Wine Museum and the Regional Enoteca of Barolo.
The building, dating back to the tenth century and originally built as a fortress with a defensive purpose, was later reconstructed as a luxurious palace and had an important role in local history.
Worth mentioning is that this was once the house of Marquise Juliette Colbert, famous in Piedmont for her large philanthropic contributions to the region, and for advancing the production technique of the Barolo wine, thus showing the way for the continuous improvement that has led to the excellence nowadays associated to the name of Langhe and its vineyards.
Barolo also hosts Collisioni, the most famous “Agri-rock” festival of Langhe and of all Piedmont.
During the event, held every summer in the old town, these colourful cobbled streets are filled with visitors coming from all over the wold to party with wine and truffle, and to listen to great music.
The festival’s line-up has along the years included a great variety of stars and legends of international music, including Bob Dylan, Elton Jones and Depeche Mode
