Neive, Italy

This charming little town is an absolute treat for visitors

Neive (Italy) shaped in the typical style of Langhe, with a circular structure perched up on a steep hill with a central castle and square, what makes it stand out is the enchanted beauty of its houses and cobbled streets, all perfectly preserved and retaining the most genuine feel of traditional country life.

Strolling around Neive is like jumping on a time machine: narrow alleys lined with old-fashioned shops, heartwarming tavernas and cozy restaurants.

Everything tells the story of those gone-by times that now only survive in the cultural heritage of rural Piedmont.

What to see

Neive spirals upward from the arched town entrances, all the wayto the central square at the top, where the bell tower and the church of San Michele stand out, respective symbols of the secular and religious powers that once competed for control over this land.

An ethereal harmony of architecture can be found in the red-brick façades of fortified houses, the remains of ancient walls, and the numerous baroque villas with lush gardens which once belonged to the gentry of the region.

The most famous manor is the palazzo of the Counts of Castelborgo, also known as the “Castle of Neive” Besides the elegance of its baroque design and its walled gardens, the palace is worth a visit for its underground cellars where the legendary oenologist Louis Oudart laid the foundations of what would become the present days Barbaresco DOCG, already winning a gold medal for his red wine at the 1862 International Exhibition in London.

Another hero of the past in Neive is Romano Levi, a distiller that turned legend for the fine quality of his grappa and the beauty of his hand-decorated bottles.

The distillery is now run by his son Serafino and hosts a little museum about the family’s history.
