Cherasco, Italy

A city gifted with impressive architecture

Cherasco (Italy) is a city gifted with impressive architecture reflecting the important role it played in the history of Piedmont and its royal dynasty, the Savoy House.

It is also part of the 11 municipalities where Barolo is grown, although hosting a single cru, known as the “Mantoetto.”

Cherasco is nonetheless an important reference in the territory of Langhe thanks to its beauty and and the quality of its restaurants.

What to see

Enter the city from the white-marble Arco del Belvedere, a baroque arch built in 1647 to celebrate the end of the bubonic plague epidemic that struck northern Italy after 1630.

Stroll along Via Vittorio Emanuele II and you will be presented with a showcase of historical buildings, alternating gothic and baroque styles.

Among them we need to mention Palazzo Salmatoris, where in 1796 Napoleon signed the Armistice of Cherasco, granting peace with the House of Savoy.

On the eastern side of town you will find the massive castle of Cherasco, built in 1348 by Luchino Visconti, Duke of Milano, after defeating the Savoy army.

The fortress is an imposing, quadrangular structure with a tower at every corner and a drawbridge in the front.

In 1529, following the Treaty of Cambrai, the structure was returned to the Savoy.
