Cisterna d’Asti is a charming old town perched on a vertical hilltop, with a large castle on the summit.
The views of the surrounding countryside are breath-taking and the ambience is quaint and genuine, making you feel as traveling back in time.
On the road leading to the castle you will find restaurants, cellars and shops where you can buy wonderful bread, salami and mustard.
The road towards Canale will impress you with stunning views of steep hills covered with elegantly shaped vineyards, and the naked-tuff gorges that are a unique feature of this territory.
What to see
The majestic fortified castle is the centerpiece of this gracious town. It was once the centre of an independent principality and even had its own mint inside the premises.
Originally built as a fortress of which it preserves the massive defensive walls, the structure was later expanded and transformed into an elegant palace with a baroque design.
The large central hall corresponds to what used to be the castle’s court. Under its floor we can still see the cistern, which probably gave the name to the town itself.
In 1912 the castle became a public property and since 1980 has hosted the Museum of Arts and Crafts, containing around 5.000 antique objects and illustrating 20 traditional crafts; a unique evidence of Piedmont’s rural and artisan past.
Worth mention is also the restaurant Garibaldi, founded in 1875 by a soldier that had taken part in the famous Expedition of the Thousand, an important battle that led to the unification of Italy.
Today it is a living museum, where the dining rooms are kept exactly like they looked a century ago.
It also offers accommodation inside its rural “borgo,” a traditional quarter built around a central open courtyard.
