Govone (Italy) a quaint small town with a charming traditional vibe, where cobblestone roads, red-brick houses and extensive gardens surround a beautiful hilltop entirely occupied by a large baroque castle.
The English-style gardens around the palace are also the site of popular public events, in particular the Christmas markets during the winter season, and the “tulips at court” floral show of springtime.
What to see
Perched on top of a hill and listed as UNESCO World Heritage site, Govone’s castle dominates the entire village and the wide valley below.
The imposing brick structure stands out for its refined elegance.
The façade is rich in decorations and sculptures, including a wide marble staircase with telamons and bas-reliefs. The interiors are decorated with beautiful frescos and include the “Chinese rooms,” completely covered in exotic-themed handmade wallpaper.
After the modernization works carried out in 1819 the castle became the Duke of Savoy’s favorite summer residence, where he received important guests likeMonarchs, Heads of State and famous artists.
In 1897 the Council of Govone bought the castle, which is now a public museum.
