Guarene, Italy

One of the best preserved town in the entire Roero region

Guarene (Italy), beautiful ancient town, is perched on a hilltop with  stunning views on the vineyards of the Langhe and Roero territories, recognized as a World Heritage site by Unesco.

Anciently called “Plebs Guarene”, the town already is referred in a document dating back to the year 1154.

The Roero family bought the feud from the Marquis of Monferrato in 1382, and in 1631 it became a part of the Savoy duchy.

What to see

Large part of this old town is occupied by the Castle of Guarene, a finely designed baroque palace built between 1726 and 1775 to a project by the count himself, Carlo Giacinto Roero.

It replaced an old turreted fortress that had been previously demolished.

The palace is surrounded by two large and elegant Italian-style gardens that offer amazing panoramic views.

Nowadays the castle has been turned into a luxury hotel complete with a gourmet restaurant and a spa overlooking the Langhe hills.

The gardens and the frescoed rooms on the first floor are still open to the public if booked in advance.

On the lower side of the castle you will find the beautiful Parish church, rebuilt in 1782 in baroque style with the red-brick façade typical of local architecture.

Note that a little enclosed pedestrian bridge on top of an arch connects it to the castle.

The passage was built to make it possible for the count’s family to reach the church directly from the palace.

Before leaving, don’t miss the panoramic view of the Poggiolo, a panoramic cantilevered balcony built in the highest point of the ancient defensive walls surrounding the castle.

And if you like contemporary art, Palazzo Re Rebaudengo -owned by a renowned art collector that has transformed into a foundation- offers exhibitions of international relevance.

Quite an impressive art venue for a tiny traditional town like Guarene.
