Monteu Roero (Italy) in ancient times the site was known as Monte Acuto, meaning ”Sharp Mount,” a name that perfectly describes the asperity of these natural landscape, marked by vertical walls of tuff and wide gorges that form the ‘rocche’: geological formations that are the distinctive trait of Roero’s landscape.
These steep hills alternate wild and brutal nature to fastidiously well kept vineyards, a striking contrast that enhances the unique charm of this region’s morphology and reveals the hard work that along the centuries has led to the rural domestication of this land.
What to see
Monteu is a quaint small town, made of brick-houses built along winding roads, perched on top of a hill dominated by an ancient castle. The Roero family acquired this dominion in 1299.
Between 1570 and 1575 the medieval defensive fortress was reconstructed and turned into an imposing palace, adding constructive details of that era that still today maintain their incredible value and beauty.
In 2012 the Berta family, historical owner of “Berta Distillerie” purchased the castle and transformed into a museum, open to the public at given times.
The fortress is linked to a curious legend. According to a mysterious parchment found inside an ancient book, Spanish troops retreating from an expedition in Monferrato had buried a treasure in the castle’s grounds; unfortunately so far nothing has been found.
