Novello, Italy

A charming small town sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by the impressive vineyards

Novello is a charming small town sitting on a hilltop, surrounded by the impressive vineyards of Langhe, in the south of Piedmont, a region of Italy famous for the quality of its wine and the refined character of its cuisine.

What to see

The town entrance is marked by the church of San Michele Arcangelo with its impressive red-brick façade and the distinctive bell tower with an arched passage at the bottom.

At the opposite side of the square stands the beautiful baroque building of the fraternity of San Giovanni.

Walking along the narrow cobblestone road that forms the axis of the town you can reach a picturesque castle overlooking the vineyards-lined hills below; it was built in 1880 by Gian Battista Schellino in neo-gothic style and has recently been converted into a hotel with a restaurant inside.

Despite its small size, this pleasant little town can host interesting events, like the classical music concerts performed during the fair of Santa Lucia.

Wine and truffle

While you are in Novello, in the heart of the terroir of Barolo, make time for a private wine tasting tour of the area.

You will feel the vibe of the local way of life and enjoy the bouquet and flavors of the great red wines of Piedmont, the famous Barolo and Barbaresco.

Picture yourself talking to local producers and walking around their old cellars; a unique experience for a true wine lover.

And if you love distilled spirits or enjoy a little liquor at the end of a rich meal, the wine shop in Piazza Marconi offers “Branda di Novello,” a grappa made from marc, a byproduct of wine making.

There you will also find an interesting selection of local wines.

Another great option for a beautiful and unique day is a truffle hunting tour.

Get out in the woods and under the experienced eyes of the “trifolau” (as the truffle hunter is called in Piedmont) let the truffle dog sniff the way to this hidden treasure of the local gastronomy.

There is no better way to get to the heart of Langhe’s local culture and learn more about the gem of its wold-famous cuisine.
