Roddi (Italy) is an ancient old town and it’s located immediately outside of Alba, its medieval castle can be seen from the city, as it stands on top of a steep hill.
Roddi is part of the 11 municipalities where Barolo wine is grown and offers an easy opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the Langhe region without having to travel too far from its main centre.
What to see
Take a walk along the narrow and winding streets of the old town and you will soon reach the castle that stands in the middle of this village and occupies a good part of the hill on which is built.
This ancient fortress was first built in the XI century as a military post and in the late middle age it was enlarged and given its present appearance.
This is one of the few castles in the Langhe to have kept its original medieval structure and looks, not having undergone any baroque or neo-gothic restyling. It is a massive and imposing structure that keeps an authentic martial appearance.
Wine and truffle
A unique and singular feature of Roddi is a little museum located right outside of the castle and dedicated to the Truffle Dog University.
The “university” is the most famous school in Langhe for truffle hunting dogs, and it was founded by Antonio Monchiero, better known by his nickname “Barot.”
It is a small museum, but full of information and curios on the unique art of truffle hunting, considered a real art by the people of Piedmont.
And if you are serious about your love of truffles, then don’t waste the opportunity and go for a truffle hunting tour.
Get out in the woods and let the “trifolao” (as the truffle hunter is know here) and his expert dog help you find the way to this hidden treasure of the local gastronomy.
Another great idea is a private wine tasting tour.
You are in the heart of the Barolo terroir, so no better way to understand its techniques and tradition than go visit some old cellar and listen to wine makers describe the wines you are tasting in front of them.
An experience you simply cannot miss.
