Verduno (Italy) has all the quaint old-school appeal of a traditional town of Langhe.
Built in a circular shape, with cozy little houses and winding cobblestone roads leading to an old castle that dominates the landscape of the surrounding valley.
What to see
The beautiful “Real Castello” (the king’s castle, in Italian) was first built in 1500 and later badly damaged during the French-Spanish wars.
In 1737 Luigi Caisotti, Count of Santa Vittoria and Marquis of Verduno acquired the castle and had part of it rebuilt according to a design from architect Juvarra, the master of Piedmontese baroque.
In 1838 King Carlo Alberto bought the castle, inclusive pf the surrounding estate and cellar, and then hired famous oenologist General Carlo Staglieno to experiment with the vinification of Nebbiolo employing the techniques suggested by Giulia Falletti Colbert, a french noblewoman and philanthropist that had an important impact on the land of Langhe.
Thus this former fortress played a unique role in the history of the Barolo wine.
In 1910 the Savoy House sold the property to Commendatore (in Italy an important honorific title) Giovanni Battista Burlotto, who continued the wine production tradition and established the cellar as a point of reference for Verduno.
The two daughters of the Commendatore later transformed the manor into a hotel and restaurant, of which they are still personally in charge.
Besides the Barolo wine, the estate is also famous for Verduno Pelaverga, a DOC wine whose identity is deeply rooted in the history of this small town.
Verduno also has a nice Belvedere from which tourists can enjoy wonderful views on the Langhe.
Wine and truffle
The best way to get to know the history and winemaking tradition of Verduno is a private wine tasting tour.
You will walk around the historical cellars and discover the bouquet and flavors of the great red wines of Piedmont, the famous Barolo, Barbaresco and the local Pelaverga.
Whenever visiting a town in the surrounding of Alba, another great idea is to go for a truffle hunting tour. Get out in the woods and follow the “trifolao” (truffle hunter in local dialect) along the search for this hidden treasure of the local gastronomy. An unforgettable experience.
